2001 Middle Yukon Flood Disaster

General flooding in the vicinity of Koyukuk and Nulato on the middle Yukon River caused by ice jams. Flooding began on the Yukon River in the vicinity of Koyukuk on May 23rd.  Water eventually covered the runway in Koyukuk as well as public water and sewage facilities and some residences in both Nulato and Koyukuk. The ice jam released on May 30th and water levels began to recede in Koyukuk and Nulato. Both Koyukuk and Nulato forwarded local disaster declarations with a request for state assistance to Division of Emergency Services.
