Alaska Air National Guardsmen Check on Rescued Afghan Boy Three members of the Alaska Air National Guard's 210th Rescue Squadron (left to right: Staff Sgt. Andre Marron, Capt. Brian Kile and Capt. Keenan Zerkel) check on Zacharias, an Afghan boy rescuedlast month, while the boy's uncle, Alan-zand (far right) looks on. After suffering life-threatening injuries in a car crash last month in Jalalabad, the boy was brought to the Bagram hospital by the 210th Rescue Squadron. Capt. Zerkel brought Zacharias a stuffed toy dog sent over from the United States. When he got it, Zacharias said, "My dog is bigger than your dog," and gave a smile that hospital staff reported was his first since arriving. Zacharias' health continues to improve, says pararescueman Brandon Steumke, who checks in on him periodically. Photo provided courtesy of 210th Rescue Squadron, Alaska Air National Guard |
