STORM APPLICATION REVIEW UNDERWAY

Application deadline for state assistance is this Sunday

CAMP DENALI, Alaska --- Alaska Division of Emergency Services (ADES) workers are reviewing assistance applications from those affected by the 1998 Southeastern Storm. A disaster assistance team spent the first week of December 1998 in Juneau, Haines and Klukwan taking disaster assistance applications from affected individuals and surveying damages throughout the communities. Those still wanting to apply have until January 24, 1999 to do so by using the toll free helpline, 1-800-834-2177.

ADES officials report a total of 66 Individual and Family Grant applications have been received so far: 32 from Juneau, 26 from Haines, 3 from Klukwan, and 5 from other areas. Each qualified applicant may be eligible to receive a maximum of $5,000 in the form of a state grant. "Applications that meet income requirements for the Small Business Administration (SBA) are on hold pending a declaration decision by the SBA," says ADES spokesperson Kerre Martineau.

Last month, SBA officials declined a declaration for the area, but an appeal has been submitted and is under review. If SBA declares the disaster, those applicants who meet the income requirements will need to apply for SBA assistance.

Government agencies and non-profit organizations in the declared areas applied for aid under the Public Assistance Infrastructure Grant program. Emergency Management Specialist Julie Kander says 27 damage survey reports (DSRs) have been written to date totaling more than $600,000 in Juneau and nearly $300,000 in Haines. ADES is continuing to work with local government and non-profit organizations to determine the need for additional DSRs.

Anyone who would still like to apply for individual assistance is encouraged to call the 1998 Southeastern Storm helpline,

1-800-834-2177, Monday through Friday 9am – 5pm. The deadline

to apply for state assistance is January 24, 1999.
