THE MILLENNIUM MARCHES ON
All is quiet as the millennium marches toward Alaska.
CAMP DENALI, Alaska ---
As of 10:30 a.m. December 31st there are no Y2K incidents to report around the state of Alaska."However," adds Major Mike Haller, spokesman for the Joint Information Center "the State Emergency Coordination Center continues its vigilant observation of world and state events."
Very cold temperatures are creating typical wintertime problems in the bush. Kaltag reports that some of their heating fuel is jelling due to minus 50-degree temperatures. Even though the sewer system in Noatak has frozen, the water system is okay and residents have clean drinking water. The State Emergency Coordination Center at Denali will continue to monitor these non-Y2K incidents. According to the National Weather Service, the extreme cold weather enveloping most of the state will continue through the New Years weekend.
With the crossover of the millennium already complete in several parts of the world, there no significant incidents to report. Amidst celebrations and gala preparations, the lower 48 states are also quiet.
