EXTREME COLD EN ROUTE TO INTERIOR

Temperatures in excess of -45° expected to hit area on Tuesday, remain through the week

CAMP DENALI, Alaska --- The National Weather Service has issued a special statement indicating that after some moderating temperatures over this weekend (Jan. 8-10), extreme cold temperatures will return to Interior Alaska and remain through the end of next week, possibly longer.

National Weather Service officials in Fairbanks advise that temperatures for this period may range from minus 45 to minus 55 for parts of the Interior region.

Planners for the Alaska Division of Emergency Services (DES) are urging residents in the affected communities to prepare for an extended cold period. DES officials recommend the following:

bulletFood: Individuals should have a one to two week supply of food and grocery items to include infant needs such as diapers and formula.
bulletWater: In case of water utility problems, residents should have bottled water available. Water taken from alternative sources must be disinfected using one the following methods:
    1. Boiling – This method is safest for disinfecting water. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least two minutes.
    2. Disinfectant Tablets – Follow directions on package; these are commonly found at sporting goods or drug stores. Double the normal dose if using cloudy water.
    3. Bleach Disinfectant – Liquid household bleach can only be used if the label lists sodium hypochlorite as the only active ingredient and there is no perfume in the bottle. Add bleach according to the table below, stir and let stand for 30 minutes. If the water does not taste and smell of chlorine after 30 minutes, add another dose and let stand for another 15 minutes.
