AVALANCHE WEB SITE PROVIDES INFORMATION
800 Lines also set up for answering avalanche questions, concerns
CAMP DENALI, Alaska --- Several new resources are available to help Alaskans reach out and get information on the response to avalanches. The Alaska Division of Emergency Services (DES) has activated an Avalanche Web Site and also a new toll-free number to the DES Joint Information Center to help people who have questions about the ongoing event.According to officials, people wanting information about the avalanche situation are encouraged to visit the Division of Emergency Services web site at www.ak-prepared.com or call the toll free line at 1-877-428-6031. The phone will be staffed 24-hours per day for the duration of the avalanche activity.
Road closure information is available by calling the Department of Transportations toll free line at 1-800-478-7675.
Dave Liebersbach, DES Director, says "In preparation for any emergency situation, all Alaskans should have enough supplies in their home to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. Also, we advise everyone to carry an emergency kit (in their car or truck) with warm clothes, food, flares, and other supplies to carry them through if they get stranded on the road system."
