State will accept assistance applications resulting from Salcha flood
Toll-Free line will open Monday morning; will operate during normal work-hours
CAMP DENALI, Alaska - - Victims of the recent flooding in Salcha area, near Fairbanks, will have an opportunity to use a toll-free phone number to make application for assistance beginning Monday, June 2.
“We’ll have people who will be answering the toll-free line starting at 0830 (Monday),” said Major Mike Haller, public information officer with the Alaska Division of Emergency Services. The number they should call, beginning Monday morning (at 0830), is: 1-877-268-3682.
“Our plan is to have several people available to field calls, and assist applicants in taking care of the necessary paperwork for grant requests. The phone lines will be open from 0830 until 5 pm each day, Monday through Friday, for the next 60 days,” said Haller.
More than 100 residents were impacted by the flooding between April 29 and May 7 resulting in an inundated area approximately 2 miles wide by 8 ˝ miles long. Efforts are already underway to work with local officials in repairing roads, erosion-control dikes, and other infrastructure.
Governor Frank Murkowski previously declared the area a State disaster Wednesday, May 21. At the request for help from local officials, the State of Alaska responded with teams from the Division of Emergency Services, Alaska National Guard, Department of Transportation, and Alaska State Troopers. Help was also provided from the Army Corps of Engineers, National Weather Service, and Civil Air Patrol.
