1. Geographic location: ALEUTIAN ISLANDS. The Aleutians Pribilof LEPC includes the Pribilof Islands, Unalaska Island, Unimak Island, Atka Island, Adak Island and all islands between Unalaska and Adak. The major hub in the region is the City of Unalaska, which is located 800 air miles from Anchorage, a two- to three-hour flight, and 1,700 miles northwest of Seattle. Temperatures range from 20 to 60 degrees. Precipitation averages 60 inches per year with accumulated snowfall up to 100 inches, primarily in the mountains on Adak. There are frequent severe storms in the winter, and calm, foggy weather in summer. 2. Size and activity: DISTRICT-WIDE POPULATION 5712. The population is divided between the Cities of Unalaska 4087, Atka 106, Adak 596, St. George 184, and St. Paul 739. All communities within the region are coastal and depend predominantly on commercial fishing, seafood processing and tourism, while schools, government and the transportation industry also provide some employment. Subsistence life styles exist to some degree in all communities. Unalaska's economy is based on commercial fishing, fish processing, and fleet services such as fuel, repairs and maintenance, trade and transportation. The harbor in Unalaska ranks as the number one port in the nation for seafood volume and value. Seven hundred ninety-four million pounds of crab, groundfish, and other finfish were landed in Unalaska in 1993, at a value of $161 million - 52% of Alaska's entire commercial fish value. A refurbished World War II sub dock offers extensive large boat repair services. Moorage is available for 238 boats. 3. Communities: The region includes the communities of Unalaska, Atka, St. Paul, St. George, and the recently closed naval facility on Adak which is ran and operated by a government contractor. 4. Of the three extremely hazardous substances known to be present in substantial quantities, the two compressed gases pose the greatest threat to communities: anhydrous ammonia and chlorine. Of these, ammonia poses the greatest threat.
