At approximately 0900 hrs EDT, September 11, 2001 an unknown terrorist group attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon using hijacked commercial airliners. This precipitated a nationwide response. An Alaska Emergency Manager is being sent to assist in New York. Jim Harris, program manager in the Recovery section of Alaska Division of Emergency Services, volunteered to work a two-week shift in the recovery from the attacks. Jim Harris traveled to New York on September 19, 2001. The Alaska Disaster Medical Assistance Team 1 (DMAT) now appears to be in the 3rd rotation and likely to be deployed from October 10-22. The Pentagon announced on 14 September that it was calling up 50,000 National Guard and Reserve personnel. Also, 2,000 USCG Reservists will be called up. Governor Knowles offered to provide assistance to the Governors of New York and Virginia and the Mayor of New York City.
