FEMA
Federal Emergency Management Agency has a
comprehensive emergency management training program. FEMA provides emergency management
training in three ways: resident courses at Emmitsburg, MD, independent study, and FEMA
developed courses conducted by states.

EMI
Alaska resident with substantial
involvement in emergency management can apply for training at the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) in Emmitsburg, MD.
- Enrollment Policy and Procedure
EMI divides the academic year into two
terms with an Application Timeline. Course prerequisites and descriptions are available on the EMI Courses and Schedules page.
To apply for a course, fill out the 75-5 application and fax to the State Training Officer.
Note: All 75-5 applications must be submitted through the State Training Officer. Prerequisite certificates for the course must accompany the application.Once applications have been submitted, questions regarding admissions may be directed to the EMI Admissions Office at netc-admissions@dhs.gov.Confirmation of a seat in a class is sent directly to the applicant, not the State.

- Independent Study Program
Courses designated as IS may be taken online. Independent Study Program materials are available to all; however, only US citizens can enroll and receive
credit for course completion. To receive a certificate from FEMA, the test must be taken online. See the EMI Independent Study pages for details.
- Professional Development Series (PDS)
FEMA created the Professional Development Series (PDS) curriculum to help
emergency managers develop key skills and abilities necessary for managing all-hazard
disasters and emergencies. To receive credit for completion of the FEMA PDS
Series, students must complete all courses.

- Integrated Emergency Management Course (IEMC)
The IEMC is a 4.5 day exercise based
training activity that places public officials and emergency personnel in a realistic
crisis situation within a structured learning environment.

- Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
Because emergency responders may
not be able to meet the demands for their services during a disaster, FEMA
developed a CERT training program. Intent of the program is to train selected first responders as
CERT instructors for their community.

Fire Academy
