Schools play an important role in emergency management.
Charged with the education and care of children, school staff must know
how to respond during a school emergency.
School emergency operations plan (EOP) can meet this need. By
describing how staff, students and parents should respond during emergencies,
the EOP can save lives, property and speed up recovery from potential
emergencies and disasters.
Why have a school emergency response plan?
Some reasons:
- Bad things can happen
- Schools are responsible for student and staff safety
- Planning prevents injuries and saves lives
- Response to emergencies is improved
- Parents/communities become more confident
- Maintain self-reliance until professional response arrives
Schools can face many natural and man-made emergencies. Some
examples:
Natural
Hazards:
- Earthquake
- Fire
- Flood
- Snow storms
-High winds |
Man-made
hazards:
- Chemical spill: in or around school
- Intruder in school
- Medical: cafeteria food contamination
- Mass casualty: school bus accident
- Utility interruptions |
Schools can also be impacted by off-campus emergencies.
Two what-if scenarios:
- Can a chemical spill on a street adjacent to your school affect you?
- What would happen if a person robs a bank and takes cover in your
school?
By up-front planning for emergencies and practicing the plan,
school administrators can ensure that faculty, staff and students can take the
actions necessary to minimize injury, property damage and promptly return
schools to normal operations.
Alaska Division of Emergency Services (ADES) is eager to
assist state school districts to develop their emergency operations plan.
Specifically, ADES can provide EOP writing training in your jurisdiction.
