DEADLINE DRAWS NEAR FOR FEDERAL ASSISTANCE
State aid applicants must reapply to receive federally funded assistance
CAMP DENALI, Alaska --- The deadline is fast approaching for anyone who wants to apply for the new federally-funded Emergency Disaster Assistance. The last day to apply for the program is April 20, 1999. According to officials, more than 4,200 people affected by the Western Alaska Fisheries Disaster have already applied for the assistance, with several thousand more expected to apply by April 20.
Last fall, Alaska Division of Emergency Services (ADES) disaster teams traveled to each disaster-affected community to take applications for the state aid program, Essential Living Expense Assistance. More than 6,100 applications were received for the state program.
"If people who previously applied for the state program want to receive assistance from the federally funded program, they must call to reapply before the April 20th deadline," said Kerre Martineau, ADES public information officer.
"The new federally funded program provides assistance to qualified subsistence salmon users in designated communities as well as commercial salmon fishermen and cannery workers from the disaster area. Last fall’s state program excluded subsistence users," she said.
