HELPLINE OFFERS EXTENDED HOURS

Applicants are encouraged to call or fax information during non-peak calling times

CAMP DENALI, Alaska --- Division of Emergency Services (DES) workers are busy processing more than 6,000 federal disaster applications received from commercial and subsistence fishermen affected by the 1998 Western Alaska Fisheries Disaster. Due to the increased volume of calls they have been receiving, the helpline hours have been increased to 8am – 7pm, Monday through Friday.

"Now more people will be able to check the status of their applications or ask questions about the assistance program," said DES public information officer Kerre Martineau.

Applicants have experienced a variety of difficulties in calling the helpline. Some problems are uncontrollable, such as increased solar flares experienced recently. Helpline workers have reported problems with phones lines disconnecting in mid-call due to the solar activity. Callers who get disconnected will promptly receive a call back to continue the conversation.

Some problems are more easily remedied. Callers may not be able to get through to the helpline quickly during peak calling times: 9am – 11am and 1pm – 3pm. "Persons needing to reach the helpline are encouraged to call during non-peak times if possible, such as during the lunch time and late afternoons. The extended hours should help those who work during the days to obtain assistance in the early evenings," added Martineau.

Applicants wanting to check the status of their applications or anyone who has questions about the Western Alaska Fisheries Disaster Emergency Disaster Assistance program can call the helpline: 1-888-388-3473, Monday through Friday, 8am – 7pm. Applicants who need to fax requested income information to application reviewers can do so 24 hours a day to 1-800-478-9525.
